This week Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi indicated her support for a proposal by Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC) that the House observe a moment of silence on the first legislative day of each month for those killed or wounded, as well as their families, in the United States’ engagements in Iraq or Afghanistan. Jones introduced legislation, H. Res. 1183, on May 8th calling on the House to implement such a moment of silence.
In a letter yesterday to Congressman Jones, Speaker Pelosi wrote: “Thank you for your leadership in proposing that the House of Representatives observe a moment of silence on the first legislative day of each month, for those killed or wounded in the United States engagements in Iraq or Afghanistan. Your idea is an excellent one and I plan to honor it when Congress returns.”
“I am grateful that Speaker Pelosi agrees that it is important for the House of Representatives to honor America’s service members who have been killed or wounded,” Congressman Jones said. “This moment of silence will serve as a solemn thank you from a grateful nation.”
“Each of the men and women who wear the uniform in defense of our nation is an American hero,” Jones said. “We must never forget that many members of the U.S. Armed Forces have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives to defend the freedoms that all Americans enjoy today. For their courage and selfless commitment to duty, these service members deserve our gratitude and unwavering support.”
